The X Factor boyband charted at number 28 in the Billboard Singles Hot 100, after selling 132,000 downloads in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan said.
This beats The Beatles’ first proper US release, I Want to Hold Your Hand, which debuted at number 45 in January 1964 after previous singles failed to even make a dent on the American charts. It went on to become number one for seven weeks.
One Direction’s debut is the highest US entry for a British act since one-hit wonder Jimmy Ray entered the chart at number 26 with Are You Jimmy Ray? in February 1998.
Before that, the Spice Girls were the last UK act to score a higher entry with their debut single Wannabe which bagged a number 11 spot in January 1997.
Wannabe went on to spend four straight weeks at the top of the Billboard Singles Hot 100.
X Factor guru Simon Cowell said today at a press conference that One Direction were ‘about to literally explode in America’.
He said: ‘There is even a chance that their album may debut at number one when it’s released.’
Cowell added: ‘We’re entering a very exciting phase of pop music and One Direction will be huge this year.’
The band were forced to apologise to Capital FM after snubbing them from their acceptance speech at the Brit Awards this week.
Harry Styles thanked Radio 1 listeners after picking up the gong for Best Single and failed to mention Capital FM, prompting the station to ban their songs on air.
The group said in a statement: ‘One Direction forgot to thank the Capital Radio listeners last night when picking up their BRIT Award for Best British Single.
This was an oversight as the boys were caught up in the excitement of winning. The band would like take this opportunity to thank Capital Radio and all their listeners for their support and for voting for them.’
One Direction’s debut album Up All Night is due to be released in the US on March 13.
